March 5th: Fifty-Three Stations of the Yokaido Road

GeGeGe no Kitaro in woodblock print

Shigeru Mizuki, the author of manga including GeGeGe no Kitaro, has recreated the classic Japanese block paintings of Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road originally created in the 1830’s by Hiroshige Utagawa. His version includes characters from his manga, however.

The opening lecture for the exhibit will be on March 5th. This will include a previously recorded interview with Shigeru Mizuki and live lectures by the manager of Mizuki Productions and producers of the exhibits. Reservations are required for this lecture. Check out this PDF file for more details.

The exhibit itself will be on display from March 5th through May 5th at the Japanese Information and Culture Center (JICC). It is free and open to the public. The nearest Red line Metro stop is Farragut North.
